How AI assistants decide which product to recommend first
Published October 23, 2026 · 7 min read
When an AI assistant searches the web to answer a buying question, it builds its answer from the pages it finds and trusts: review sites, “best of” lists, comparisons, forums and the brands' own pages. Brands that are described clearly and consistently in many of those places are the ones it names, and the one that best fits the buyer's stated situation tends to be picked first.
What the assistants read
For questions about products, assistants with web search usually look things up and cite their sources. In the answers Seroq collects, the cited pages are typically review and listing sites, comparison articles, community threads and vendors' own pages. Which sites appear varies by category and by assistant.
Without web search, an assistant answers from what it learned in training, which favours brands that were widely written about before its training cut-off.
What tends to get a brand named
- Being mentioned on the sites the assistant reads for that question, not only on your own website.
- A clear statement of who the product is for, so it can match a buyer's situation (“for small agencies”, “under $100 a month”).
- Specific, checkable facts: prices, features, numbers, named customers.
- Consistent facts everywhere. If your price or features differ between sites, an assistant has less reason to trust any of them.
- Pages that answer the buyer's question directly in the first sentences, which are easy to quote.
Why “chosen first” is harder than “named”
Many answers list several options and then recommend one. Being listed means the assistant knows you; being chosen first means it found a reason to prefer you for this buyer. That reason is usually stated in the answer itself, which is why it is worth reading the exact sentence: it often names the feature, price or proof your competitor had and you did not show.
What this means in practice
Start by measuring which questions you are missing from and who is picked instead. Then get mentioned where the assistants already look, publish honest comparisons, and make your key facts easy to find and consistent. Seroq's reports show the cited sites and the quoted reason for every competitor's pick, so you can see which of these applies to you.
Questions people also ask
- Can I pay to be recommended?
- Organic answers cannot be bought. Some assistants have started showing clearly labelled ads, which are separate from the recommendation itself.
- Does schema markup make AI recommend me?
- Structured data helps machines read facts about your company correctly, which is useful. On its own it does not make an assistant prefer you; mentions on other sites and a clear fit for the buyer matter more.
