How to choose an AI search optimization tool or agency: a checklist
Published October 23, 2026 · 6 min read
Choose a tool or agency that shows you the actual AI answers behind every number, measures the same questions over time on the assistants your buyers use, and is honest that answers vary from run to run. Be wary of anyone who promises a ranking or a guaranteed place in ChatGPT: nobody controls what an AI says.
The checklist
- Does it show the evidence? Every score should link to the real answer, the sentence that names (or ignores) you, and the sites the assistant cited.
- Does it separate “listed” from “chosen first”? Being one of ten names is very different from being the recommendation.
- Which assistants does it cover, and how? Answers from the consumer apps can differ from answers through an API. A good tool says which one it used.
- Are the questions realistic? They should be the questions buyers ask, mostly asking for a recommendation, and must not contain your brand name.
- Does it handle variation honestly? Answers change between runs. Look for repeated measurements, ranges or a clear statement of how sure the numbers are.
- Does it tell you what to do? A list of competitors is not a plan. You want specific actions tied to what was observed.
- Can it compare like with like over time? Same questions, same assistants, so a change means something.
- Is the price clear? Count what you get per month: brands, questions, engines and how often it measures.
Warning signs
- Guaranteed rankings or “first place in ChatGPT” promises.
- A single visibility score with no answers behind it.
- Questions that include your brand name, which inflate results.
- Reports that never mention failed or missing answers.
Tool or agency?
A tool measures and points to the gaps; an agency also does the work of fixing them: content, listings, outreach. Many teams use a tool to measure and then decide whether to fix things in-house or with an agency. Agencies that sell AI visibility work should be able to show you a measurement before and after.
Seroq is a measurement tool built around this checklist: every figure links to the quoted answer and cited sites, missing, listed and chosen first are counted separately, and each headline number comes with a 95% range. Agencies can run it for their clients with white-label reports.
Questions people also ask
- Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
- It overlaps. Good SEO helps, because AI assistants read the web. But AI answers name a few brands and lean heavily on what other sites say about you, so reviews, listings and comparisons matter more than in classic SEO.
- How long before results show?
- Changes to your own site can be read within days or weeks; new listings, reviews and articles on other sites usually take weeks. Measure before you start and again after a month or two.
